House on Mango Street 3

beautiful and cruel:
i thought this story was very interesting. especially the part when esperanza mentions how she will have a "quiet war", or in other words an eventual rebellion against her life on mango street. she wants to escape mango street and begin a better life of her own. I also found it very interesting the part when she mentions no one coming for her, so she has to break away on her own. this relates to the later story the three sisters who tell her that when she leaves mango street she must come back to help the others that cannot escape mango street. in this story, she reveals her insecurities about herself but they do not she to pullher down.

red clowns:
i found this story very interesting. instead of feeling violated after being raped esperanza is angry at sally, which i found very odd. Her angry at sally pertains to her impression of sex. Sally told esperanza sex was this beautiful, life changing experience but when esperanza is raped, she feels disappointed and she feels as if she never wants to have sex again. this story also has racial prejudice this is revealed when the rapist says "i love you spanish girl" obvisously he felt superior to esperanza and he felt that violating her was not wrong, but it is a crime.

House on Mango Street 2

Those Who Don't Feel Safe
in this story esperanza explains how she only feels safe among those of her own race. although i do not feel this way i can understand her fear around other races of people, due to the fact that there is alot of racial disgrimination in the u.s. and her home is in the projects, an area known for gang violence.

And Some More
i found it very interestiong the way esperanza, rachel and lucy desribe people they know. they compare them to the various types of clouds which vary from delightful and intimidating looking. the clouds along with the weather are constantly changing much like the people they describe, people's behavios and personality constantly change like the clouds.

House on Mango Street

My Name
In this story Esperanza talks about her she longing to have another name. The name she has now means hope and was her grandmothers name. But her grandmother lived a life of sadness and waiting, Esperanza wants to rid herself of this name because she hopes to have a future of her own. I feel Esperanza's wanting of a different name, for the longest time i hated my middle name but i have embraced it and have come of like i. Esperanza is a girl who just wants a life of her own and wants to leave the pain her grandmother went through in the past, and I respect that and find it very interesting.

Laughter
In this story Esperanza talks about her connection with her sister and how their laugh and sense of humor is the same. Sisters share a truly special bond, but it varies among sisters. My younger sister and I both find the same things funny and sometimes it seems that we almost share the same brain. But, my older sister and I have a stronger connection and a better understanding of eachother. I find this story very interesting especially the part when Esperanza mentions how you can instantly tell that Rachel and Lucy are sisters. But, Esperanza and Nenny not so much you need to know them before you can make any judgements. This plays into the don't judge a book by it's cover sort of deal.
